Imported from Russia early in the 20th Century, today the Karakul is a rare breed with approximately 2,000 in the U.S. Renown as the breed that produces Persian lamb, the elegance, grace and beauty of the Karakul set it apart from all other sheep breeds. We began raising Karakuls in 1992. One of our bloodlines, “Ponte” established in 1939 at the Doubletree Ranch in Oregon, is designated a “Historic Bloodline” by the Karakul Registry. Mrs. Ponte’s mother acquired her Karakuls from breeders whose flocks included original imported Russian stock. Bud and Eloise Ponte maintained a “closed flock” over the intervening 61 years until their flock moved from California to OGF in May 2000. OGF Karakul ewes are typically productive until 11 and 12-years old. They regularly have twins and easily breed “out-of-season” to lamb in October and November. The Karakul ewes are friendly, have great mothering instincts and abundant milk for fast growing lambs. OGF Karakuls display the full array of natural earth-tone colors – Black, Gray, Silver, Red, Honey, Brown and White. Their lustrous, silky, long-stapled fleece is highly desired by felters, spinners and rug weavers. |
